Chicago
Architectural and Travel Photography - May 10-12, 2013

A Workshop on Architectural and Travel Photography.

A great city like Chicago has so many things to offer. Great architecture, festivals, dinning and other entertainment. How do you capture it for a magazine article on travel? It involves architectural images, people and places imagery and many other types of photography. This workshop will cover what it takes to capture a city over a small amount of time. Ways to capture the architectural images and the grand vistas along the lakefront of the skyline and must see places and events. We will discuss pre-planning a shoot, ways of seeing and perspective, Photoshop and workflows and other processes.

Itinerary: (subject to change based on weather conditions)

The workshop starts Friday evening with a meet and greet followed by a lecture on “Seeing and Perspective” to get you thinking about the shoots the next day.

Saturday we will start with sunrise along the lakefront to get the best cityscapes    followed by time shooting a few architectural images along the Chicago River and its famous buildings in the soft morning light. We will return for lunch and a review of people’s images from the morning shoot before heading out in the afternoon to shoot the streets of Chicago, Millennium Park and the museums along Michigan Avenue before shooting sunset. After dinner there will be a lecture on Photoshop, Nik Software and workflow in Lightroom.

Sunday we will once again rise for sunrise along the North Beach area of the city and then walk into the city shooting whatever meets your fancy. We will meet in the afternoon to review everyone’s work and offer suggestions and compliments as we close the workshop.

Maximum Class Size: 12

Price: The workshop price is $550.00. Price does not include transportation to or from Chicago, hotels or meals, except those we will supply when shooting in the field.

Travel: You are responsible to get to the base location hotel by the start time of the workshop. Once we are together we will discuss carpooling options. If you would like to be included in carpooling possibilities from any airport locations please indicate that on the registration form.

Workshop Notes: Friday night we will discuss the experience and desires of the group and possibly alter our schedule based on participant’s wishes and what they would like to shoot the most. We will also discuss carpooling options. There are plenty of interesting things to do around the area for any non-workshop members.

Experience: Basic understanding of your camera operation (bring your manual – I always have mine!).

Suggested Equipment: Any Digital SLR with lens or lenses that range from wide angle (24mm or less) to telephoto, tripod. A film SLR is fine, but film processing is not available, if you are going to shoot film we suggest you bring some prints or slides if you would like to participate in any critiques. Cameras larger than 35mm are also acceptable, although 4x5 might be too cumbersome to work with on this workshop. If you would like to shoot 4x5 please contact us first and discuss the options. A laptop for image editing, flash drive to share images, macro lens or close-up diopter, polarizing filter, long telephoto (300+mm) or 2x convertor, split field neutral density filters
