Reflections on the First Year

In marking the first anniversary of Quiet Light Publishing and our offering The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes, I would like to say thanks to all of you who played an integral part in our successes this past year; and of course to each of you who are now enjoying the book, or the limited edition prints.  What a year it has been!

When I began this journey I was unaware of the intricacies involved in the publishing industry. Going through this experience - however surprising it has been - was rewarding in its own right. Learning the elements involved with distribution, marketing and the business of publishing;  is ultimately what enabled me to meet so many of you at various book signings, lectures and other events. I often said while creating The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes, I would keep a focus on how a reader would view the images and react to the book. Your responses to this book have been greatly appreciated.  Words cannot express my gratitude. All I can do is continue to make the type of photographs that elicit such a response.

On that front I am working on two books currently and have an idea for a third. I have spent a lot of time photographing in Great Smoky Mountain National Park on the Tennessee and North Carolina border. I hope to have a book of images, which speak to the changes over the last 30 years in the near future. In addition I am working on another book with a working title of Grain Elevators, The Rural Skyscrapers a book that looks at what used to be the center of activities for small towns across America which are disappearing quickly.

As I reflect back on this initial year, so many memories rush forward in a torrent from the opening night party at River East Art Center in Chicago, being a part of the Lewis & Clark exhibit at The Newberry Library in Chicago, radio and television appearances including national coverage on NBC Nightly News and the resulting flood of orders that followed - placing us in the top 1,000 books (out of over 600,000 books) on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble's websites. In addition, we have garnered many book awards for the design, printing, and, of course photography. This is particularly poignant when you consider the odds of a first-time book, particularly a fine art photography book, succeeding. We have clearly beaten the odds thanks to your support.

In the coming year, we hope to make it easier to buy prints from the book online, continue our series of lectures and book signings at various sites and maybe even find more time to work on the next books!

Again, heartfelt thanks goes out to everyone; those of you who bought a book as well as all those who helped launch this company; for your support this past year. I look forward to many more years like this one.  Peace.

From Amazon Reader's -

"Richard Mack is clearly a remarkable, talented man. His skill in photography, his love of the widely varied American landscape, and his respect for the members of Lewis and Clark's expedition all shine through in every page of this beautifully crafted book. If you love photography, you need this book. If you love natural beauty, you must buy this book. If you are intrigued by the human stories and the visceral phenomena that make up the fabric of every historical event, get this book right now. Mack didn't merely travel the trail and take great pictures here and there. He captured moments right out of Lewis and Clark's journals by photographing each spot along trail at the same time of year that the expedition party was there, often presenting the photographs with quotes from the journals themselves. You turn each page and move along the trail with the party, seeing much of what they saw and understanding the wonder and awe they must have felt in the midst of riveting views, often brutal conditions, and seemingly unending newness. I've shown this book to dozens of people. It draws not merely appreciation, but admiration. It's a book you will find yourself thumbing through again and again."

"Those who have read and admired Steven E. Ambrose's "Undaunted Courage" will be moved by this photographic depiction of Lewis and Clark's Journey of Exploration. The photography is incredibly vivid, and romantically evokes the magic of the western American landscape. A masterful piece of work."

A true journey and labor of love. Mr. Mack captures the beauty, serenity, and majesty of our country and shares with us the magic of that courageous expedition. A brilliant concept, captured by a gifted photographer!

From the Media -

"The Lewis and Clark Trail: American Landscapes is a 256-page full-color slab of a book. It's a rapturous representation of the American landscape, seen both in grand wide-angle vistas and in the surfaces of wildflowers and water. It's a book that John Muir would've liked."

"A beautiful book of photographs of the Lewis & Clark Trail"

"Nobody else has done this book... A fabulous and beautiful book about photography & history."

"This book is absolutely gorgeous!"

"This is one of the best books on the trail. Richard's photography makes you feel like you are right on the trail with Lewis & Clark!"

"The Land as the captains viewed it... This handsome book's price tag reflects its exceptional production values."

"A serene and beautiful book!"
