Newberry Library Exhibit Features Images by Richard Mack

On September 28, 2005, the Newberry Library exhibit Lewis & Clark and the Indian Country begins its four-month run in Chicago featuring landscape images from The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes by Richard Mack. Some of the images chosen for use in the exhibit will be displayed as murals as large as 10’ tall and 22’ long. Most will be 8’x8’ murals and some will be flying screens above the visitors as they stroll through the exhibit which explores the Indian country through which the Corps of Discovery explored on their journeys from 1804-1806.

In conjunction with this exhibit, a series of lectures will take place starting on Saturday October 1st when Gary Moulton, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will speak about the history of the journals of Lewis & Clark. Additional speakers from various tribes the Lewis & Clark Expedition interacted with will also be featured throughout the exhibition and lecture series.

On November 5th at 11:00 am Richard will lecture on The Lewis & Clark Trail and The American Landscape. His lecture will feature images from the book The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes and he will also discuss some of the changes along the route over the last 200 years and the places he found where you can still catch a glimpse of what it might have been like for Lewis & Clark and the Corps of Discovery in the early 1800’s. Also part of this program will be a film and lecture by Sally Thompson, University of Montana. Her film Native Homelands Along the Lewis and Clark Trail will be screened and discussed.
