As the year comes to an end we can look back on another great year for Quiet Light Publishing. Once again this year we received an award for The Lewis & Clark Trail AMERICAN LANDSCAPES. The Eric Hofer Book Awards (formerly the Writers notes Book Awards) awarded us the prestigeous Gold Medal for Best Self-Published Book. In the words of the award committee, "Terrific concepts appear simple at first glance, or at least they should. Richard Mack’s photo essay delivers brilliance and simplicity on a grand stage—the northwest trail forged by the Corps of Discovery in the early 1800s. The Lewis & Clark Trail traces the footsteps of the famous explorers by visiting this still pristine landscape in the very seasons that the explorers first walked the terrain. While historical accounts typically focus on the hazards and death along this historic journey, Mack’s series of pictorials takes in the awesome beauty, barely interrupting the journey with Lewis and Clark’s own trail notes. The combinative effect is astounding. It is as if we see what they saw." We are very proud of this accomplishment.
In addition to this award, Richard Mack's image Cathedral Trees, shot while he was working on the Lewis & Clark book, won an Honorable Mention in two categories for Fine Art and Nature Photography from the International Photography Awards. With over 18,000 entries it is quite a compliment to have been in the top 15 and given a nimination for the top prizes. The Lewis & Clark Trail AMERICAN LANDSCAPES won a Silver medal for Best Nature Book in the 2005 International Photography Awards.

Most of all we wish to thank all of you who have bought our books and prints in the past. We hope you will continue to follow our trail as we expand and bring you more photographic works in the future. We also hope to release another book by Richard in the fall of 2008, a book on 30 years of photography in one of our most celebrated of Natinal Parks, Great Smoky Montains National Park. You can see a preview, and purchasee, some of these images in our Gallery!
As we close out the year, we wish you all the best in 2008!
Peace,
The Quiet Light Staff

From Amazon Reader's -
"Those who have read and admired Steven E. Ambrose's "Undaunted Courage" will be moved by this photographic depiction of Lewis and Clark's Journey of Exploration. The photography is incredibly vivid, and romantically evokes the magic of the western American landscape. A masterful piece of work."
Paul O'Connell, Eastham, MA
A true journey and labor of love. Mr. Mack captures the beauty, serenity, and majesty of our country and shares with us the magic of that courageous expedition. A brilliant concept, captured by a gifted photographer!
