Three More Awards for The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes

At Book Expo America, held this year in Washington, DC in May we won two Silver Medals for The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes, from the Benjamin Franklin Book of the Year Awards, one for Best Coffee Table Book and one for Best Nature Book. These awards were presented at the annual dinner the opening night of the event by the Publishers Marketing Association. Book Expo America is the largest book expo in the country and attended by hundreds of thousands of book sellers, publishing companies, and book buyers from around the world.

Our other award came from the Sappi Paper North American Printer Awards where we also picked up a Silver Award. These awards are given to the printers for outstanding printing in the United States, so congratulations also go to The Stinehour Press for doing such a fine job printing the book! We always knew they were the best!

Upcoming Events

On September 20, 2006 The Midstates Imaging & Photographic Association (MIPA) will host "An Evening with Author/Photographer Richard Mack". The lecture and book signing will take place at 7:00 PM at the Skokie Public Library, Skokie, Illinois. Richard will show work from the book, discuss how he went from the idea to the finished book and about his photographic processes. The members of MIPA are primarily working photographers around the midwest, however, this meeting is open to the public and all are invited to attend. For further information, or to book Richard for your event, contact us at Quiet Light Publishing.

Abbott Molecular Purchases 84 Prints.

We were honored when we got a call from Abbott Molecular, a division of Abbott Labs, about their desire to purchase fine art prints for their new headquarters in Des Plaines, Illinois. They also purchased books to give to those who made discoveries in the molecular division. We were able to consult with them on which images to place at certain locations around the building and made several new triptychs of images from the book, some as large as 24"x72" in size. We developed an overall plan for each area of the building including using black & white images in their board room. To read more about this project please go to READ MORE.

The Smithsonian Institute - Our New Marketing Approach?

Early this year we contacted The Smithsonian Institute about selling our book in their stores and online, thinking it would be the perfect book to coincide with their hosting of the National Lewis & Clark Exhibit at the Natural History Museum in Washington, DC. We sent them a copy of the book in early January and by the time the Book Expo was held in April we had still not heard from them. Since the exhibit opened the same week, we decided they needed the books in the stores and placed two copies there on our own. Donating two books to a store doesn't seem to be reasonable way to get them to sell your book, but it seemed like a unique approach. Read more about it and see photos of the event online READ MORE.

We've had some pretty great quotes from the media, but you can also find what people who have purchased the book have to say about it online at various places like Amazon. Add your voices there and we'll feature them in this space in the next issue of the newsletter!

From Amazon Reader's -

"Those who have read and admired Steven E. Ambrose's "Undaunted Courage" will be moved by this photographic depiction of Lewis and Clark's Journey of Exploration. The photography is incredibly vivid, and romantically evokes the magic of the western American landscape. A masterful piece of work."

A true journey and labor of love. Mr. Mack captures the beauty, serenity, and majesty of our country and shares with us the magic of that courageous expedition. A brilliant concept, captured by a gifted photographer!

From the Media -

"The Lewis and Clark Trail: American Landscapes is a 256-page full-color slab of a book. It's a rapturous representation of the American landscape, seen both in grand wide-angle vistas and in the surfaces of wildflowers and water. It's a book that John Muir would've liked."

"A beautiful book of photographs of the Lewis & Clark Trail"

"Nobody else has done this book... A fabulous and beautiful book about photography & history."

"This book is absolutely gorgeous!"

"This is one of the best books on the trail. Richard's photography makes you feel like you are right on the trail with Lewis & Clark!"

"The Land as the captains viewed it... This handsome book's price tag reflects its exceptional production values."

"A serene and beautiful book!"

Blogging with Richard

You will soon be able to talk to Richard Mack and ask questions about photography, traveling the Lewis & Clark Trail (or to many of our other National Parks or wilderness areas), discuss the trials, tribulations and joys of publishing your first book, ask him what his next project is or any other questions you might have. In the next month or so we will have a blog setup for you to inter-act with Richard on all of these subjects and more, except of course when he is out there on location shooting for that next project! Keep watch on our website for further information. Until then you can email him at anytime at richard.mack@quietlightpublishing.com.

Traveling with Richard

The first week of August found Richard helping to lead a group of 12 Scouts down the Missouri River in Montana in the area known as The Missouri Breaks. He had a great time, canoeing with the folks, teaching them about the trail and photography. For six days they canoed 109 miles from Coal Banks to Kipp State Park through the wilderness areas known as the White Cliffs and the Charles Russell Wilderness. Days were spent hiking and paddling, with some members getting up early to climb the hillsides for sunrise, while others climbed around for sunsets. If you want to see some of the images from this trip, you can use this link: Montana Trip. To read more about the trip you can at READ MORE.

He came back and asked about the possibility of leading more trips around the country. If you would be interested in participating in a trip lead by Richard let us know as we are currently formulating ideas for next year. These do not have to be on the Lewis & Clark Trail, but anywhere you'd like to go with a photographer as your guide. You can email us at anytime at info@quietlightpublishing.com. READ MORE.
