Their Love of Music
Photography by Stephen Azzato
Foreword by Lester Holt, Newcaster & Musician
In Their Love of Music photographer Steve Azzato has captured the essence of the creative spirit in the faces and words of the musicians themselves. Featuring portraits of 117 artists, the book takes a slightly different approach to music photography than typically seen. “The beauty of this project for me was being able to sit with a huge range of musicians and explore what drew them to their art”, says Azzato. “I was able to hear it in their voices and record it visually in their images”. In the simple quiet of a green room, without the crowds or bandmates or tour managers, Azzato’s photographs transcend the chaos of the stage and the intensity of the studio to reveal the inner spirit that drives each of his subjects. Richard Mack has started his next books! Turning his lens on all five Great Lakes he intends to examine the bodies of water which hold 20% of the entire worl'ds fresh water and 95% of North America's fresh water. Think about that for a second. This includes all the streams, pond, rivers, lakes and snow melt. Man has lived along these bodies of water and used them as a source of food and transportation for thousands of years, yet only in the last few hundred have we had a profound effect on these waters. This book will look at not just the natural beauty which most be saved, but the cities and industries which border our lakes. You can follow Richard as he documents these waters starting now through our blog or Richard's Twitter account.
Check out more on this book on the Great Lakes Project Page where there is a lot more information and opportunity to be a part of this project!
The working title for this book is Twenty/Ninety-Five The Great Lakes Landscapes.

About Their Love of Music
"It is unlike anything I've ever seen and what I love about it is the fact that the portraits are just that...not on stage, not 'action' shots. And I also really like the fact that there are plenty of people I know and plenty of people I don't.”
- Terry Stewart,
President and CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum
“I agreed to write the foreword for Steve’s book based on conversation and seeing some sample pictures from the concept. Having returned to my office to find a copy last week, my reaction was that it is amazing work and he should be proud! I'm very pleased to be a part of the project.”
- Lester Holt, NBC Weekend Today Show anchor and author of the Foreword
“I starting looking at the PDF of the book online last night, intending to just get a taste of it, and wound up going through all of it. It just pulls you in. The portraits are exceptional. There are quite a few artists I did not know. The photos and quotes make me curious to hear their music, too. Which is as it should be. Congratulations to Steve on an extremely impressive effort. I'll have to get me one.”
- Dan Phillips

About the Great Smoky Mountains Book
“This is the finest coffee table book we've ever seen on the Great Smokies!
Park employees are buying it as gifts.”
-Curt,
Great Smoky Mountains N.P.
“Richard has a sensitivity for light that’s pretty rare. He can
coax a richness out of landscapes and low light conditions that you don’t see other photographers experiment
with. His photographs have an emotional depth that is superior to a lot of other work. It’s the best large format photography book we’ve ever been able to offer our visitors.”
- Steve Kemp,
Interpretive Products and Services Director
Great Smoky Mountains Association
“I took some peaceful...thoughtful time with your book. Beyond the exquisite technical execution there is a profoundly sensitive eye...
that is quite revealing of your self...
and at the same time revealing you as a natural extension of the observation.
To be able to reveal yourself to the world through the visual poetry of your craft is a beautiful and dare I say rare gift.
I was...awed. ”
-Jenni,
Barnes & Noble
About the Lewis & Clark American Landscapes Book
“This may be the most beautiful of the many Lewis and Clark
coffee table books published over the past few years. If you’ve ever wondered
what it must have been like to be with Lewis and Clark on their monumental
journey, looking at Mack’s beautifully rendered images is”
-Tom Dickson,
Editor, Montana Outdoors Magazine
“Richard Mack’s ember photograph of the Missouri River at twilight gently moves off the page into your soul.
I’ve never been absorbed by a photograph in a coffee table travel book as much as this spiritual picture in The Lewis & Clark Trail: American Landscapes.”
- Dave Hoekstra,
Chicago Suntimes
“The Lewis & Clark Trail American Landscapes is
a 256-page full color slab of a book. It’s a rapturous representation of the
American landscape, seen both in the grand wide-angle vistas and in the surfaces
of wildflowers and water. It's a book that John Muir would've liked.”
- Nicholas Day,
The Chicago Reader
“A beautiful book of photographs of the Lewis & Clark
Trail”
- Gary Moulton, Editor
The Lewis & Clark Journals
University of Nebraska
“Nobody else has done this book... A fabulous and beautiful
book about photography & history.”
- Janet Davies, ABC News

- Elizabeth Bracken, PBS
“This is one of the best books on the trail.
Richard’s photography makes you feel like you are right on the trail with Lewis & Clark!”
